Robert Irvin McCain

Robert Irvin McCain (Uncle Doc) was the first McCain who came with a wagon train of relatives before the Civil War.  He was married to Elizabeth Fowler.  They settled first at Grand Saline.  While farmers here, they would bring wagon loads of salt and trade for corn and cotton, etc.

Robert was a Confederate soldier and fought in Texas and Louisiana.  Toward the close of the war, he was stricken with typhoid fever.  He was cared for by a Catholic family who only spoke French.  He was not heard from for two years.  He walked home.  His wife knew his step when she heard him coming.

They moved to a farm in Johnson County, then later, moved to Tarrant County.  Both died in Keller and are buried at Bourland Cemetery.

Their children are:

1)      Clint, who married Mary Bates.

2)      Tom and twin, the twin died, Tom married Margaret Bates.

3)      LeeAnna, born August 4, 1866 and died December 16, 1935, married R.V. Keller.

4)      James William (Billy), born December 25, 1871 in Grandview, Johnson County, Texas and died December 15, 1943.   He married Mary Lu Alice Warren on December 18, 1890.

5)      Oscar married late in life.

6)      Lula was married to Ed Bourland.

7)      Lenora Alice, born March 23, 1878 and died July 20, 1955.  She was married to Joe Price.

8)      Laura was married to Will McSpadden.

Billy and Oscar played with guns.  The gun jammed.  Billy took it and shot Oscar in the foot.  The doctor couldn’t believe that the shot gun went off.  Father cut the bullet out.  Blood poisoning, barely avoided amputation.
