John Haire

John Haire, a Confederate veteran, and his wife, Mary Louisa (Lowe), came by wagon train from Albany, Georgia, to Texas in 1880.  The family group included three children, Calvin, Ella, Rufus Martin, and Grandma Haire and Grandpa Calvin Lowe.  They settled in the Jellico Community.

In addition to being a farmer, the father found seasonal work at the local cotton gin.  While in this employment he suffered a leg injury that caused him to walk thereafter with a cane.  The gin held great fascination for his eight year old son, Calvin (Bud), who often spent the day with his father on the job.  On one memorable day, a neighbor, Sam Houston Thompson, brought a wagon load of cotton and was accompanied by his six year old daughter, Amanda.  The children played while the cotton was ginned and baled.  When the Thompson’s drove away, Bud told his father that when he became a man he intended to marry Amanda.

In the ten years that followed, the Haire family lived briefly in Collin County, then returned to a farm north of Grapevine.  During that time, Bud never changed his mind about Amanda.  At the ages of eighteen and sixteen, they were married.

Other children of John and Mary Louisa Haire were Ella, Rufus Martin, Rilla, Charlie, Laura Dola and Eula.  Ella married Tate Miller; both buried at White’s Chapel.  Rufus Martin; Rilla Married George Rogers (son Carmel) lived in Frisco; Charles married Emma _______, (sons Charlie and Donald); Laura Dola married Arthur Tate, both buried in Blue Bonnet.  Eula married Marvin Langley, both buried in Grapevine.

The mother of these children was born January 5, 1850.  She died June 9, 1905 and was buried at White’s Chapel.  The father spent his declining years with his children.  He died in the 1920’s at the home of Rilla Rogers, in Collin County and was brought back to White’s Chapel for burial.  His gravestone bears the following inscription:

“John Haire, Company A, 29 Georgia Cavalry”.

Calvin (Bud) Haire, the first child of John and Mary Louisa Lowe (Haire), was born in Georgia.  He came to Tarrant County as a small boy in 1880.  Among seven brothers, he was the one who chose the Keller area as a permanent home.  At the age of eighteen, he was married to sixteen year old Amanda Thompson, November 16, 1890.  She was the daughter of Sam Houston Thompson and his wife, Mary Ann.

The Haire’s were farmers in the Jellico Community.  Their religious affiliation was with the Church of Christ.  The children attended Florence School.

The mother, Amanda Thompson Haire, was born on November 28, 1874, died on December 27, 1920.  She was buried in White’s Chapel Cemetery.  The father, Calvin Haire, born April 12, 1872, died on April 10, 1940 and was buried beside his wife.
