William Allen Price

William Allen Price, sixth child of William Wiley and Eliza Ann Mason Price, born April 30, 1857, was married February 4, 1875 to eighteen year old Mary Felena Evans of Benbrook, Texas.  Their home was a farm which joined Keller on the west.  Two children born to this union were Joseph Wiley, born June 18, 1876 and died August 28, 1936, and Martha Ann (Annie), born October 1, 1879.  The wife and mother, Mary Felena, born April 16, 1857, died March 12, 1884 and was buried at Mt. Gilead.

The second marriage of William A. Price was to the widow, Lucy Annie Jane Ball Woods, October 21, 1886.  The children of this union were Robert Claude, born June 11, 1889, died June 19, 1889 and Nora Felena, born June 15, 1897 and died October 26, 1963.

Mr. Price, a Mason, is remembered as a man with many friends, most of whom called Uncle Bill.  During World War I, he could be depended upon for a generous contribution to the Red Cross fund and the purchase of Liberty Bonds.

Mention of Work War I brings to mind Uncle Bill’s problem with members of the Royal Canadian Air Force, stationed at Hicks Field, to be trained for combat duty.  With an over supply of confidence, they were unaware of danger as they dipped low over the pasture to buzz his pampered work horses just for kicks.  If the plane failed to regain altitude, it landed in a nose dive which killed both flyers.  Uncle Bill maintained guard over the disaster area until a small Army ambulance took the bodies west to Hicks Field and a truck hauled away broken pieces of the plane, almost toy size compared with today’s giant bombers.

William A. Price passed away November 30, 1922 and was buried at Mt. Gilead.  His wife, Lucy Annie Jane, born December 12, 1865, died February 17, 1950.  She was buried in Bourland Cemetery.
